Having lived in L.A. for many years, off and on, the best description comes from comparison. San Francisco is like a beautiful woman. San Diego is very macho, very male. L.A. is like a raped woman, you have to have a lot of compassion to live here. Right now it is way too hot, it is early for the fire season, but fires we have. There are jobs but it depends on your skills/interests/willingness to do other work than your first choice if you are not very experienced in what you do. Housing.. well, in a suburb, the house I currently sit in, sold in the sixties for about fifty grand.. now they tell me it is worth half a million.. rents are high, traffic is bad, smog is bad, crime is rising, but you will not freeze to death unless you get locked in a walk in.

Well, living here is definitely not cheap, especially when you are in Los Angeles City. The San Fernando Valley, however, may cost less depending upon what type of home you are looking for. If you are planning on buying a house, now is not the best time since the prices are much higher than a couple of years ago. Although, I doubt if it will ever go down again.

As for the crimes, it has its fair share. Like major cities, such as New York, crimes are inevitable; some may say that this is "Lawyers' Heaven". Many locals would agree that some senseless lawsuits are brought to court just to make some money.

The night-life, correspondingly, in Los Angeles can be described in many ways, but definitely not a bore. Just travel down to the "Sunset Strip"- a section of Sunset Boulevard centered in the Beverly Hills area- and you will see numerous amounts of clubs, restaurants, etc. where celebrities spend their nights.

Overall, Los Angeles is a nice area to visit. However, if you do not have much money to spare, it is not advicable to live in.

Check out this website for a map of the Sunset Strip.

By the way, this is in my own words- not copied out of a website. Enjoy L.A.!

Forget LA!! Come south to the OC!!
I am a so cal native... born and raised in LA, and moved to Orange County to get away from the conjestion.

I live in a middle class neighborhood and houses for a 3 bedroom townhouse is $600,000. The average price of a home in the lower income area is $250K, mid range $450 and if you want very wealthy, expect $950K- 2.3 million (and of course, and up!) The close to the beach, the more expensive.

Job varies, depends on what you do. You cannot live in LA with a minimum wage job. A person should make at least $35K to be able to afford home, car, food.

Crime is like any big city. You have to be aware, and just play it safe. No one can predict if you're going to be safe or not, but its not any reason to stay scared.

Nightlife in OC is tame compared to LA... I would travel to LA (about 1 hour) for the clubs and restaurants. Clubs range from average to the "VIP" red rope ones where you need to know someone to get in. Clubs on the Sunset Blvd is the more famous and popular ones you see on TV, and they can range from dance to comedy.

The town does close early for a big city. Most restaurants close at 10- or 11 pm, but some stay as late as 2 am. Bars close at 2 am and stop serving alcohol around 1 or 2 am.. I forgot the curfew. They open again at 6 am.

It is crowded, expensive and there's a lot of traffic to deal with. You will probably have a good selection of jobs to choose from. Crime levels depend a lot on what area of LA you are in, but they are probably comparable to any other major city. Despite all of this, it's obviously very popular, and there are a lot of things to do in and around the city. Let me know if you have any other questions.
