My mother took out 2 credit cards in my name when I went away to college in 2001. These two were both cancaled after my mom stopped paying them. I just found out about them this year, when I tried to buy some furniture. I need to know how I can find out who to pay for them so that I can get my credit back on track.

You can call the credit card companies and ask them what collection agency they have referred your account to, or you can pull your free credit report from http://www.annualcreditreport.com to check your own report and see what collection agencies have control over those accounts.

Call the credit card companies and ask them who their collectors are. Also, you can get a copy of your credit report, and the collection agency will be listed on your credit report. Also, when you pay off the debt, ask the collection agency to take the ding off your credit report. They can do that! Good luck!

After you find the companies or collections agencies, tell them you want to settle the account at 40%. If you have a financial hardship they will settle with you. The may say no the first time but keep trying.

Get a copy of your credit bureau report, it will tell you the name of the debtor and the amount that you owe.
