I've got Windows 2000 with a ton of applications running at startup... Need to get rid of some?

I've got Windows 2000 with a ton of applications running at startup... I've removed all items from my StartUp folder, but still when I do a Ctrl+Alt+Delete to open task manager, there's a bunch of things running... how do I find out what these are, and stop them from running automatically if they don't need to be? Again, I've already done the StartUp folder clean-out... All of these processes aren't listed there. HELP! Thanks.

Tried the MSCONFIG thing from the run bar that worked in Win98... No longer does here, or is my computer jacked up?

THANKS IN ADVANCE!!

If you didn't install the applications, I'd say you've got one helluva bug!

If you don't have a good Anti-Virus Program running, I'd reccommend Avast.

you can download Avast, which is a good Anti-Virus Program
that is free for Home Users from:-

http://avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

While you're downloading it, fill out the registration form at :-

http://avast.com/i_kat_207.php?lang=ENG

They'll send you the product license code to the e-mail address that you provided there.
Copy and paste it in the Registration Key blank area that pops up when you start the program.

You can choose and download the skin you like, for the antivirus, from :-

http://avast.com/eng/skins.html

I'm sure you'll like this Anti-Virus and it'll protect you from those viruses that could hit your computer.Once you've installed it, click on the icon in the system tray and set the "Resident Protection" for the Messenger, E-mail, Internet and the e-mail Clients from the default "normal" to "high" and it'll give you the thorough scanning of all these utilities before letting them through

All the best..

I think you're looking at the Processes tab on your task manager. Those are mostly things running in the background that you need to have. I currently have 38 running on mine. It's normal.

If you have Windows XP or 2000, you can right click on My Computer and select manage ... in there you'll find a section called Sevices and Applications that will give you a better explanation of what processes are running on your PC and why. You can stop them from there also.

1. Check in Services. There might be some un-wanted services (like if your PC is not in network, DHCP Client, DNS Server, WINS Server etc.) which can be running. Disable them.
2. While Windows is up, wait for some time. Then launch Task Manager. You might be able to notedown much executables - which you dont want, but are running. Manually stop them.
3. Run Microsoft Anti-Spy Beta. Its available free from MS Site.

Ms config should have worked.
you might want to try going to google and typing in..start up manager or something like that, there's a lot of software on the market that can manually open up whats running on your pc and you can click on each one to stop.
also type in what your processes are in google and there's a website that tells you what each are so you know whether or not to close them.

start -> run
regedit
Hkey_local_machine->software->microsoft->windows->currentversion->run

there are the most progs which start on startup

but be sure you only delete the ones which are not needed
you can kill your whole windows if you mess around in the regedit

i have 76 prozesses running thats normal

Sounds like you may have some spyware attached to your computer. You may want to take it to Best Buy or somewhere to have it removed.
