It is because in Britain we have a higher Ampage in our electricity supply (ie more dangerous) so the size is to incorparate more safety features than in smaller plugs. (An earth wire and also a fuse)

British plugs are bigger for various reasons. The first is that they have to accommodate pins that are larger in cross section. This means that the plug remains cool to the touch and never reaches the temperatures of a US-style plug. Unlike US plugs, British plugs are very firmly fixed in their socket, and it's practically impossible for them to loosen and fall out of the socket.Secondly, UK plugs incorporate a fuse. This is because, unlike US wiring systems, British wiring systems use ring mains and, while the ring main is protected using a 30-A fuse, the plugs can be fused to match the appliance to which they are connected.

Because we have 3 wires in ours not the standard 2 that you have in Japanese and american plugs. Earth, live and neutral. American plugs etc only have live and neutral wires in their plugs.

Plus they are easier for old people to grab hold of if they need to change a fuse...

Because they have a third connector for a earth wire, protecting the user from getting electric shocks off appliances if they short circuit. America, Europe etc don't have this an are not as safe. Plus they don't fall out all the time.

The chance of putting your fingers on the live points that go in to the wall are much less, because you get a full grip on the back of the plug.

We have three pin plugs in the U.K., as opposed to the two pin plugs that you're used to. The extra pin we have is the for earthing all the appliances, and it makes them an awful lot safer.
