It's because of where you live in the world, and with whom your having this conversation. Go to India, Syria, or China - and they might not think that.
On the other hand, Christianity has the largest followings in the world.
The majority of religions are based on the idea of God. The afterlife. Where did we come from? Why are we here? What happens when our time here is over? Amazingly enough the three religions that believe in the same God are always at each other's throats - Christianity, Judaism, Islam.

When someone mentions religion, everyone assumes Christianity because christians are the ones... 95% of the time... who are publically babbling about their religion. Most non-Christians have better manners, which usually prevents them from doing that... so it invariaby turns out to be a big surprise if/when such a babbler turns out to NOT be a Christian.
With regard to your second question... religion has EVERYTHING to do with god. I am particularly amazed by the utter stupidity of people who go around saying nonsensical things like "Christianity is NOT a religion... it is a way of life." Can they REALLY be that dumb? (Yes) Can't they afford a dictionary, for Pete's sake? Aren't they smart enough to figure out how to access an on-line dictionary? (apparently not) That is a SLOGAN... not a FACT.
OK... here's a fun exercise for you:
1. Find a dictionary
2. Look up 'religion'

Maybe because the majority of the user in this website is from the west, and most of them are christians (if they believe in religion). I live in Indonesia and when someone mentions religion people assume Islam. It depends on what kind of community you're in and who you live with.
Most of religion nowadays believe in God, and that means religion got everything to do with God (Supreme Power, etc). That is the very basic thing of religions that live in modern days. Religions in the past (like in Greece and Roman), or maybe religions like Hinduism etc don't believe in God, but gods (multiple).

Just for the record. There is a seriously big difference between religion and being a christian... The one is something you do cause you have to and the other is something you do cause you want to. as soon as your a christian and you have to go to church and stuff like that then you turn Christianity into a religion... then you might as well not do anything cause then it really doesn't make a difference in any case

Religion does not mean Christianity for all.It may be so for europeans ,UK,USA etc.Buddisam is having maximum members.Since Buddha is an incarnation of Maha Vishnu, the Hindu God,the largest relgion may be Hinduism(including Buddha).Christanity comes 2 nd or third. There are more than 200 religions known .Hindu, Muslim ,Jain ,Parsy,Buddhists,Christanity,Sikhs are well known. That is all.
The Central Theme of all relgions is one all powerful God and no relgion can survive with out God.
Ancient relgions worshipped Sun,Moon,Planets,Fire etc are God.Still there are Sun temples in India,Indonesia,Sri Lanka etc.Certain religions worship Fire as God!

because the majority of the English speaking world are christians. And gods do not exist without religion. religion is the worship of a god or gods. just living a good life without regard to a supreme power is a philiosophy.

This is a great question. Personally, I don't assume it, but I think a lot of people who come to this site do.
For example, it seems like certain people are surprised to see someone who is pagan in Y!A religion section, and they have every right to be there.

That depends on the perception of that individual and his intelligence.
No, I have no such assumption when people mention about religion.
The master usually refer his supreme believe as God. God does not usually refer to Christianity. There is other religion which refer God as their supreme teaching.
