It's told that Buddhism came to Sri Lanka from Orissa, India. And many believe that Sihalese is similar to Oriya. Can anyone give some relevant examples of words or phrases that are similar.

It may be told or believed, but that doesn't mean it's necessarily true. Sinhala (also called Sinhalese) and Oriya are related, but not *very* closely. See sources section below.

There could be similarities in languages between Sinhala and Oriya, Sinhala and Bangla, Sinhala and Sanskrit, Prakrit, etc since all these are languages are spoken in neighboring regions in the Indian sub continent. The word "Sri" is added to names in the Indian sub continent with reverence. There are also similarities between Indian Languages and Thai, Burmese. There could have been a common root language like Pali in which the Buddhist scriptures were written and regional dialects could have developed around Pali.

would be keen to know - how sri lankan culture evolved post monks from Orissa (kalinga) moved there to preach, germinate and spread Buddhism in some 300 BC..

Well they should have influenced some culture and language when they brought in the most dominant religion in the country , more so when that religion was introduced with love and not with sword unlike what Islam did to Hinduism in Indian sub-continent or did the same to Zorastrian, Buddhism and Judaism in Iran, Afghanistan.. Islam which spread through rape and blood ( through sword and harems) - erased and destroyed what was indigenous belief.. ask any Pakistani or Afghan or for that matter Bangladeshis and India Muslims and they would refuse to believe that their ancestors were converts - that they have the blood of hindus running in their veins - that it was their great great grand mothers who were put in harems and then the next generation had to embrace the "illegitimate father's " religion .. or that their ancestors were too scared and accepted Islam than being razed..
