I know they are numbers found in the library but just how exactly do you classify them?

You mean Dewey Decimal Classification -- all you need to know is here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dewey_Decimal_Classification and here http://www.oclc.org/dewey/resources/summaries/default.htm

they're called "dewey" numbers, not "jewy"

they're subdivisions of the various categories of the books in the library, eg (making all this up) science might be 200, and then chemistry 210, physics 220, etc. the various subjects within these divide further eg biochemistry 213, astrophysics 221. then these get decimals to further subdivide, eg "astrophysics with relation to latin american politics" might get 221.549 or whatever

hope that helps - just keep in mind that i made all those numbers up

I presume you mean Dewey numbers, they are numbers usually on the spine of the book and identify which topic a book is and where in that section it should be placed
