Im a veteran and I think that all veterans deserve a ceratin degree of extras within the country as compared to others who havent served. Such as money for education, prefernces for jobs and other stuff along those lines that are already given. Yet some of the vets that are permanintly injured from a confilct definitley deserver free health care, which is also provided by VA, not the best qualitity of care but better than nothing. I believe vets do deserve more than others though, but only to an extent, it should not be a free ride through life though.

Every American that has served a day in the service of his country in a foreign nation deserves whatever his nation can afford to provide. We are at risk twenty four hours a day and for as many days as our leaders retain us there. It is not only from hostile action but disease, discomfort, weather and the worst is the waiting. Waiting frays men's nerves and some of the older soldiers sought relief in bottles and others in drugs. Post traumatic stress syndrome is a good example of how things go wrong and end up with misery and suffering of the man that served his country. Agent Orange is still another mistake that was denied and refuted and men suffered, and the Gulf War syndrome is still being contested. How could a person sitting at home, mowing his grass, or having a cold beer judge what is good for a man that suffered through heat, mosquitoes, bobby-traps, snipers, torrential rains, lousy food (MREs or C & K rations), stale water, and feeling like a dog when you go to the toilet? I am not talking about the right of such military adventures but I am addressing the hardships of the men that were called to do their duty or felt the pride of being an American to want to do it. Just recently, my sister-in-law mentioned that she and my brother didn't have time to keep up with the events as they were too busy raising a family. My Purple Hearts came hard and they were having a barbeque or going to Church or something those days. I blame a lot on the media for mis-casting the American troops as being infallible, with the odd soldier being killed. It would be nice if they screamed it loud and clear that war is no fun. I, too, am bitter that the people back home don't really understand, and those that did have already passed on. You deserve anything and everything you need to keep your health. You did your bit.

You posted this question at least a half a dozen times.
What the hell is up with you?
You really a VET?
If you don't think Vets deserve health care at VA facility than don't avail yourself of those benefits.
If you want want to end up at an intersection with a cardboard sign that is your decision.

You say you are thinking of going back into the army and that you are ALREADY receiving VA benefits?
Which ones?
You are drinking like a fish and you are suicidal and these issues are not being addressed?

Sorry pal ....I can't help but think you are making this up....

doesn't sound right

Couple of points:
1. Veterans had taxes taken from their pay while they were in the Military, so the words "hand outs" and "free" do not apply.
2. Veterans actually did something selfless for the benefit of their countrymen so they deserve some recognition, and some respect.
3. You should serve in the Military, if you have the stones for it, and then decide if your health care benefits have been earned, or are, as you say, "hand outs."

first of all, THANK YOU!!!!!!
i can understand you are reluctant to make claims or to go to the VA, but please do! it isn't a handout, you risked your life for us and you deserve what was promised to you. the sooner you open claims and put dates on things the better off you are! if it is a case of you getting disabilty you may not get it right away but they do go retro active and pay from the date the claim was opened. not only do you deserve your benifits now, but also later in life. by filing and using the VA you are another number...the more numbers the better. not only will it help to keep your local VA open it will help in keeping others open as well. when there is the need and proof of it the benifits will only get better.
i also would urge you to look into the various groups available to you and where you can fit in the VFW, DAV,PVA, American Legion...etc. those numbers help too.
i know it is hard but you deserve everything we can give back to you. and if you still think it is a hand-out, i'll be the first to tell you i'm more than happy to give it to you.
once again, thank you for your service. god bless you and your family!

In the late Roman Republic, combatants got free agricultural
land, a fraction of the booty, in addition they were not assessed ANY taxes (ANNONA) at all.

Talk about incentive.

But health care was catch as catch can. How much money you had, you could get a Greek or Egyptian doctor who claimed to have cured some nobles for a chunk of it.

Taxing those who protect a country is low and actually skinflint mean.

Well, first of all your question has a very biased sway, dont you think? but to answer your question, only veterans that have served in a war AND are permanently injured because of service are treated at VETERAN HOSPITALS. it is the same as if you were a manager at walmart and a mishap made you loose your arm. except we in the military dont have workers comp.

now another thing.....you can bash america and the government, and thats ok. but dont ever say anything remotely cross about the people who are fighting over seas. they are facing the horrors of war because they had no future except flipping burgers for a lifetime. now they have college money and a lifetime of nightmares from seeing thier friends die next to them, from picking up thier mangled body parts, and having to carry on like nothing ever happened. now before you shoot your mouth of, do a little reaseach. we dont think we deserve it, if we have been injured while serving the government WE EARNED IT. and its only free for injuries incurred on active duty, anyway. so quite whinining , i pay health insurance just like you do.

It should not be termed as "free hand outs" because it demeans every patriot who fought in uniform.

Patriots and heroes deserve privileges. They may not ask for it, but extending privileges has been a hallmark of a responsible society who view the value of people's sacrifices.

1) Because they were PROMISED benefits when they elisted.
2) Because they duck bullets and bombs so you can watch the Super Bowl without a shotgun in yer lap.
3) Because some of them didnt make it back.
