The main causes of bad breath or to give it its medical name halitosis, is decay or gum disease. So the first step is a visit to the dentist, because to try anything else could only be masking the problem. You need to get rid of it for good.
Flossing brushing and mouth rinse to follow.

Try cleaning you teeth 2-3 times a day, take your brush to work/school/college etc and brush after lunch. Also scrub the tonge, use dental floss and rinse with an antibacteria solution. Make sure you visit your dentist regularly, as sometimes bad gums omit an odour. Morning breath, everyone has, even if they dont think they have.

To combat bad breath, you need to maintain a good dental care regimen. Use your common sense: brush your teeth twice daily, floss, and use an anti-bacterial mouthwash. When you brush, brush your tongue or get a tongue scraper. See your dentist twice a year for check-ups and a thorough cleaning (you get to choose from a variety of tasty toothpastes - I like the apple flavour). Tooth rot can be a nasty culprit for pongy breath. Avoid foods that will cause bad breath - onions, garlic, etc. Take a packet of sugar-free mints around with you for emergencies.
Just take care of your mouth, and you won't have people running a mile when you talk to them :o)

bad breath is caused by bad bacteria, remove that and you don't have bad breath.
Not all bacteria causes bad breath but the ones that do hide between your teeth (floss) around the tastebuds on your tongue(brush tongue), the back of your tongue. They also love to hang out in decayed teeth under dentures and around braces. So clean all of those places and you're 99 percent the way there. They also like dryer mouths so drink lots of water, stay away from stinky food and you should be right.

Me and the wife use "Tri-Oral" mouth rinse from QVC. Didn't like it at first because it felt like it dried my mouth out, but after using it for a few days straight, my wife doesn't complain about my breath when I use it. She can tell immediately if I haven't used it! I brush my teeth very well, and haven't had a cavity in years and yet my breath still kicks like a karate flick sometimes! "Tri-Oral" works for me every time. :)
oh, it is a little pricey, but definitely worth at least looking into if halitosis is a big problem.

I find mouth wash, whilst it kills the bad breath germs, seems to kill the good germs to and leaves my mouth feeling worse than if I just brush really well.
