I live in Aberdeen and I hear ya!!! There are baby seagulls on the roof outside my office window and people i am on the phone with often think i'm at the beach and i'm at the opposite end of the city!! One even stole a sandwich out of my hand near the belmont cinema!! They are evil!! Did you know that someone got killed by seagulls?? He was swimming near cliffs and got too near to the nests so the seagulls started diving at him and pecking him , the only way to get away was to go under the water and he ended up drowning as there were hundreds of them attacking him!! There should def be a cull against them. IHATE THEM!!!!!!!!!!!

This is the right category.

Ok seagulls are very territorial by nature and will defend it with aggreesive behavior.

The squaking is to ward off predators at night.

Now you say they arent pets.

Just for the record. If a seagull is hand fed and well socialized from a young age it will make an affectionate house pet that loves human companionship. Provided it has a spacy cage or aviary.

www.mynahbird.com lists a breeder who sells hand fed silver seagulls. And They say the seagulls make great pets. They MUST be hand fed though, and they require a lot of space.

Yes my daughter was attacked by sea gulls when we lived in the Highlands! A baby gull had fallen off the nest and she went to bring it a little water and food to be attacked by the rest of the sea gull clan! She sustained a nasty graze and a cut! Had to get a tetanus booster. I don't live by the sea but we're not too far and do see some but not as many as we did in the Highlands! Many years ago, just when Impulse first came out, there was commercial on TV, you may remember it? It said "Suddenly a stranger buys you flowers" (Because you're wearing Impulse. So i bought some and walked back to the bus station in Inverness when a huge sea gull flew well over my head and dropped large poo on my hair! Yuk it was disgusting!

The few sea gulls we have here do not come too close to our house because we have lots of crows who chase them! I know sea gulls can be a nightmare. What bugged me the most was watching people feeding them in Inverness while i kept looking out for them as i didn't fancy another poop on my hair !!!

At this time of year yep.
I live at the other end of the UK (South Coast).
The gulls pull the rubbish around the town. Attack people in their gardens, Crêpe everywhere.
And as you say they squawk through the night.
But the reason they're so rife in this town is due to the fact they are very well fed. I.E. Discarded burgers, kebabs, fish & chips, pizza...ect.

I am in Wales and they come inland (about a mile) when there is bad weather on the sea.... if ya want to stop em squawking, put out some treats for em ------ they aint very fussy, just make sure it is tasty and ya will have some quiet....

.......like bread dipped in fat, or chips, or just about anything LOL cos they will like it ----- left-over pizza, bread dipped in milk, anything at all

If that don't work, then have some seeds or cut-up cheese handy and throw it outa the window when they make a noise

I've seen how vicious these sods are, and that was when I was working in London. There seems to me a mutant species that enjoys attacking anything, and flicking its digested Mcdonalds scraps at unsuspecting passersby.
These things do cull the pigeon population, as I've seen one kill a flying rat and start devouring it.

I don't think you can class them as vermin, but they are bloody annoying; well, the variant up town are.
