And yes it is up to you to give your tithe or not...but like some others have said...churches need money to run, they have bills too. Oh, and the ministers usually do not make much money. I know this one for sure, my boyfriend is a minister and our church does not pay him or the pastor. They have to have real jobs, all the money donated to the church pays the bills, then it buys food and supplies for the soup kitchen it runs.

in my opinion...
a box for free will offerings is much more appealing than having a 'plate' publicly passed in front of you in expectation of you putting money in it. sometimes the collection plates get passed more than once in a service.
with a box -- u can just discreetly donate what u like and if u like
