I can't think of a short answer to this question. There is so much one can do to protect ourselves in the short run.
The most important thing we need to do for the next generation is to educate our young to become tolerant of others.

1. By completely eradicating religions from the earth and building up a secular society ; where people enjoy every kind of liberty and freedom;
2. By removing boundaries between any two countries and making whole world as one village;thus making every one responsible;
3. By upgrading intelligence and spy system to greater extent

Education
To educate people on humanity than racism and religion. May be we will see a light at the end of the tunnel somewhere down the line. Hard task though

Education. If we can go to Afghanistan and reopen the mosques so they can learn what true Islam is, then bin Laden will have trouble getting recruits. If we can set up schools so people can learn trades to support their families, they won't feel so up against the wall and start hating everybody.
