When I had Windows 98SE I could install Norton antivirus with no problem but now I have Windows 2000 pro and it says I need SP2 why is this when Windows 2000 is newer than Windows 98SE?

Because there are problems in ALL Microsoft products when they first come out. You need service packs to enable you to do things.
Just install SP2.

Perhaps you're installing a different version of Norton Antivirus?

If not, remember that Windows 98SE is a completely different OS than Windows 2000. Whatever Norton needs (or needs fixed), just isn't there in Win2k until after SP2.

It depends on which version of Norton Antivirus you are using.

Like Norton 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 PE, 2005 or 2006.

For me Norton 2005 worked in Win98SE but not in Win XP Pro.

SP2 includes some security fixexs needed to keep your computer safe. It's simple and free to install.
