I would suggest thinking about WHY you want to reinstall the operating system? Its a fairly last resort/major project and step. If its because teh PC is running slow and behaving badly.....try to resolve the particular problem 1st....ie: All the usuals...check for Viruses...over filled Temp Files and any other nasties kicking around. Having checked everything properly ....then run a REPAIR from your Windows XP disc. Make sure you BACK UP important stuff 1st prior to doing ANYTHING!!!
I have helped out my friends PC#s many times by simply purchasing a new Hardrive on Ebay for around £30 .....installing that as new Master drive...and using the old Hard Drive as a back up device (set to slave) ...then you can insall your Operating system on the new harddrive from Fresh...and all your progs....and then drag accross all the old files. Make sure you run an up to date VIRUS checker 1st though.
Checkout the array of free Registry scanners and checkers online..........although to gte then to be really effective...you end up paying a few quid in the end.

I use NORTON SYS WORKS ....that seems to keep everything in full working order for me...and I hammer my PC for proffesional purposes.

It depends on how you re-install.
If you are doing a full re-format of your hard drive then installing XP, you will need to back up all your documents then reload them afterwards. In this case you will loose all your programs.
If you are trying to repair the existing installation, use the repair option when you run the XP CD. It is still wise to back up all your documents, but you shouldn't loose your programs.
You can also choose to do a full re-install from the first XP CD menu. This should give you the option to re-format your hard drive, but this will mean you loose everything, as above.

Oh u must backup all the files in the folder "MyDocuments" to elsewhere.or they will be covered and u will lose them forever! and,all programs may need reinstall.
in fact,u neednt reinstall OS every time when u feel it has some problem,u can use Norton Ghost to backup ur system when it works well, and restore it when u need.installing OS and all the programs is so boring and wastes ur time.
u could get info about Ghost here:http://www.symantec.com/home_homeoffice/products/overview.jsp?pcid=br&pvid=ghost10.
my english is very poor, hope u can understand me, lol

no, you will have to reinstall all your programs, and for My documents you can make a back up, just copy the folder to other partition and after XP installation move it back
