Excel is a spreadsheet application; i.e., extensive use of formulas. Think of it like a tax form: you enter a number into a certain place (cell) and have the computer do the math for you. But you have to learn what formula to use and how to use.

Database application is about building information (data) in row(s) (1 record) and columns; e.g., on row 1 you can have data about yourself. The columns divide the data up (say, column 1 is Prefix [Mr., Mrs., or Ms.], column 2 is First Name, column 3--Last Name, column 4--address, column 5--city, etc.). You can query the database to return only certain data; e.g., you can ask it to display only the names of all the people in the database that live in a certain city (or cities). You also build the appearance of how you want forms and reports displayed. As in Excel, you can calculate values.

As a college instructor, I recommend you get a feel for Excel first, Then learn Access (database).

Excel is probably a lot simpler for both of you. Databases are a bit more complex to build.
