Now that I understand more, what I'm really asking is whether I can use standard RCA cables for component usage (Y, Pb, Pr)?

Yes you can use component cables for composite connections. But justso you know, composite connections are much older then component. Component is the newer port system and offers better quality for video. Composite carrys all of the RGB (red, green and blue) signals over 1 cable and the left and right audio channels over two other wires. Component however, splits the RGB channels over 3 cables allowing for more precise colors and high definition data over the cable, something that composite cannot do. Hope this helped :)

Composite video cable is another term for the RCA plug that is used for audio connection. And no you cannot use component cable for composite cable. The composite video cable carries the entire video signal on one wire, component video cable breaks the signal basically into three(for color purposes), therefore if you were to use component for composite it would be like only getting one third of the picture because the other two would be missing. Also your tv needs to accept the component video signal or this to would result in no picture or poor picture quality. But to get the best picture use component cable, next would be s-video cable, and then composite cable.

You can use standard RCA *VIDEO* cables for component signals. Component signals are just three video signals. DO NOT USE RCA *audio* cables for video signals, and get high quality cables if your TV is HDTV. In general, video cables will have a yellow marking on the connector, while audio cables are marked with red and white (or sometimes red and black). If you use three video cables, be sure you mark the ends with colored tape so that you don't mix them up. The advantage to using a set of component cables is that they come already color coded, and they are more likely to be of high enough quality for HDTV.
