I think the term was originally used to describe the writer (recently deceased) Hunter S. Thompson, who was a real wildman. He did drugs, drank heavily, and was known for his dark and over-the-top wierdness. Johnny Depp plays him in a movie, which I think is named after a famous book by Thompson called Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas. Or something like that. Thompson was also the model for the cartoon character Uncle Duke created by Gary Trudeau in his Doonesbury comic strip. So,...gonzo means wildly stoned and out of control.
