If it isn't done in a proper place by someone who knows what he is doing, it can get infected seriously. It can hurt the skin all the way around it, and will leave marks and scars. Very bad for your health.

When you go to have it pierced pay attention to these things:
*The space has to be clean of course
*The person who pierces has to wear doctors gloves
*He/she must have an examination table like in a doctors office
*Everything must be sterile clean
*There must be a refrigerator there (sounds weird, but trust me)
*There must be a sink with running water

AND....If you get a gold piercing, 18k is the perfect one to get. Make sure is not one of those whole cheap ones. If that is to expensive, then get sterling silver.

Good luck.

I had my belly button pierced, and I had no problems. My body heals quickly. But I also followed the piercer's guidance to a T. You MUST clean it out regularily. Do NOT change the piercing until they say so. The worst thing girls do after getting their belly buttons pierced is putting a new belly ring in it too soon. That is not good and your body could reject the piercing or become infected, turn green, etc. Also, if you are chronically sick, you might want to re-think getting it pierced. People react to piercings differently. Some people's bodies heal faster than others, and I would think someone with a weaker immune system might heal a lot slower. Check with your doctor. Also, after I had the piercing for 5 years, one day it came out and I didn't notice it, cuz I was at the gym. 30 minutes later when I did notice it, it had closed up. Something to think about...

Besides possibly acquiring a disease if the "piercer" uses dirty utensils, the worst problem that I can think of would be infection. You have to clean a belly button piercing all the time.

Migration (where it grows out), allergic reaction to the metal, infection.
