Just what exaclty is the difference among strawberry (or grape or whatever) jelly, jam, and preserves. I am just wondering. It all tastes great on my morning toast, just what's the difference.

Jam: a spread made from fruit boiled with sugar

Jelly: a fruit preserve that is made by boiling fruit JUICE, sugar, and sometimes pectin until it has a semisolid consistency

Preserve: to make jelly, jam, or marmalade out of a fruit

Marmalade: citrus fruit jelly: a clear thick preserve made with citrus fruits, usually containing the shredded rind of the fruit.

Therefore, jelly has no fruit (pieces) in it; jam does.

Jam and preserves are subcategories of jelly. Jam is a complete paste. Preserves are somewhat pastelike, but also have mangled fruit bits floating around in the mess. Jelly means either jam or preserves.

Jellies are made only from the juice of fruit, and they are typically the stiffest type of fruit preserves.
As a rule, a jam is a thick puree, made from fruit pulp or crushed/mashed fruit.
Preserves are similar to jams, except that they consist of chunks of fruit (or even whole fruit) in a thickened syrup (for the sake of convenience, the terms “preserves” and “jam” are used interchangeably throughout this article).
Traditionally, marmalades are preserves, but they’re citrus-based.
And a conserve is a jam made from a blend of fruits. Conserves usually contain some form of citrus, as well as nuts and/or raisins (many contain alcohol, as well).

jam till has some of the inside texture of the fruit, while in jelly everything is mushed up and made so each spoon is exaclty the same. if u look, jam usually has pulp or seeds or something, while jelly is translucent or transparant, with just about nothing els inside.

Jelly has the consistency of gelatin (thus the name I think :-)). Least flavorful. Jam is one step higher in the thickness & flavor department. Preserves is by far the best of them all in terms of flavor and texture. Usually less artificial ingredients too. Jam spreads the best to me though.
