i've heard it's hard to achieve bleached-blonde highlights with black hair by yourself, but i'm wondering if dying it blonde (maybe ash? possibly very light?) after bleaching the black hair would work, since bleached hair is at least lighter and easier to color.

Unless you want orange tiger stripes go to a professional. Dark hair is hard to lighten.. and no matter who does it or how careful they are, to get you bleach blonde you will have straw for hair.

The problem with doing it yourself is that double processing (especially this drastic) can really break your hair off. You need someone who knows what they are doing to watch it.

Here's a suggestion. Go buy bleach blonde hair extentions and have a few put in.. it will be much less harmful

First of all I would not try to attempt this at home unless you know exactly what you are doing. But here are some tips just in case you decide not to let the professionals do their job~

Since your hair is Black that would be a level 1 hair color (Levels are the degree of "lightness or darkness" of a color that is "reflected or seen" by the eye. Hair color is assigned a Level 'number' from1 to 10 with 1 being black and 10 lightest blonde.)

If you are wanting to bleach blonde highlights you will need to lift your hair color at least 6-8 levels (depending on how light you actually want to bleach it.

When hair is lightened it goes through several stages of lightening from the darkest to the lightest from a base of blue in the case of natural black to pale blonde with the palest of yellow as its base color.

This lightening process fractures the color pigment creating undertones that are unwanted.

To correct this, the opposite color is added to the formula to "cancel" out the unwanted tones or other secondary colors are added in varying amounts to add special effects or customize the color to an individual's desire.

Remember the color prism you were shown in grade school? It fractured light into distinct visible colors you could see. This is what you are doing with hair color except you are adding or subtracting colors to "correct or change from one color to another and change the undertones."

I could go on and on but I am not. So if you need futher information please do not hesitate to contact me~

Hope this helps~

Honestly, I wouldn't try it at home. With dark hair, things aren't so easy. If you must have blond highlights, go to a salon and get them done. Besides, you shouldn't really throw anything on your hair right after bleaching. So to get the results you want w/o frying your hair, get it professionally done.

Yeah, you could do that, but it could really damage your hair.
