How to speak Chinese

I love Hong Kong! It is fabulous! I just spent four wonderful days there and loved every minute of it.

Almost everyone speaks English, Cantonese, and Mandarin so travel is very easy if you speak one of these languages. Most signs are written in Chinese and English as well.

The HKTB (Hong Kong Tourist Bureau) is amazingly helpful. They have many offices but their main one is at the Star Ferry pier on Kowloon side. They offer many free activities every day, like Tai Chi classes, Feng Shui, Tea Appreciation, etc. I did these activities for a lot of my trip and it was very cheap. They can also help you plan your own day trips to the New Territories and outer islands. (Lantau is very popular and they have a new ride opening "soon.")

Many backpackers stay on Kowloon side on Nathan Road. Mirador Mansion is very cheap but not the greatest place on Earth.

If you go in the winter it is cold at night and none of the hotels are heated, bring a sweater and socks.. Get your self ready for loads of walking up and down stairs and grades. With that in mind don't walk down the long way from the peak, man I though I was going to die, it's a hell of a lot longer than you think.

Buy your self an "octopus card" to use on the public transport. Available in the subway and they have all kinds of deals for tourists.

Ride the Star Ferry and take a tour of the harbour if you like boats and the water.

You can buy anything you might need there and things you never though you might need. All at a discount..

travelling in HK can be done by yourself. You dont need to be able to speak Cantonese. almost 100% of the signage are in English and it's practically easy to use the public transportation such as buses and underground railway.
When you arrive at the HK airport, before the immigration point as well as the baggage claim area, you can take free travel guide in HK. It's available in English, Chinese and Japanese.
Have fun and keep shopping!
