The unpaved part is a little tricky. Depending on weather, it is sometimes closed. Also, rental cars are not allowed on this part of the road, so if anything happens to the rental car while you're driving then you are liable.

From Hana, there is a great waterfall. The drive is really scenic as well but the roads are really narrow. One car barely fits. Then there is a national park with the Seven Sacred Pools. Depending on weather you can go for a swim. There is also some nice hiking. You must pay $10 admittance fee for park (though it covers all parks in Hawaii for one week, including Haleakala.)

Heed what the others have written. If your car breaksdown for any reason on the unpaved road, your rental company won't some and get you. You have to find a tow truck that will come out there, and that is very difficult to do when you are stranded in the middle of almost nowhere. It can take up to two days to get towed according to our guide. If you want to try it, do not do so in the compact vehicals offered for rental at the airport. You have to upgrade to something that has decent clearence because there are areas with poor clearence, and if you damage the car, you know who is stcuk holding the bag. But if you do, there are awesome areas of interest there. I recommend getting a book called "Maui Revealed." in it you will find out the real deal on just about everything Maui, including stuff along that road.

Pan.daili is correct. You're better off taking the paved road in a rental car. I've taken the unpaved road with family that lives there & there aren't lots of stops since it doesn't cater to visitors.
