I just found out that my friend of 13 yrs has hepititis and we would occasionally take a drink out of each others cup. Do you know if it possible for me to have caught it also?

What type of Hepatitis? There are A,B,C,E,F,G. But the most common is A And B. Hepatitis is is self-limiting..meaning you will recover even without medicines. While B is the sexually transmitted and is dangerous to the liver.Well..according to what you said it is Hepa A. It is not that contagious through saliva but better check your sclera (white part of the eye ) if it is yellowish then go to a doctor to confirm it. Hope this helps. :0

You should not have to worry.
Hepatitis A is self-limited, meaning it resolves within a few weeks (ie no one has it for 13 years). However, just so everyone knows- it is possible to get Hep A from saliva, although the more common route if fecal-oral (eg an infected person wipes themselves, does not wash their hands well and then serves you food)

In this case, the most likely culprits are Hep B or C (your friend should know what he has) - these can only be spread via blood or semen, not saliva.

No, Hepatitis B is spread by sexual contact. Hepatitis C is spread by contact with an infected persons blood. Hepatitis A is caught by eating or drinking contaminated food or water. Hep A is not common in the US. There is a series of three injections that can protect you from Hep B.

Hepatitis- Inflammation of the liver. Infective hepatitis- synonym. "catarrhal jaundice," virus infection of the liver with long incubation period, causing jaundice after a brief influenza-like illness. Virus may be dormant in blood after infection and if injected (as in blood transfusion) may cause homologous serum hepatitis. Anicteric and abortive forms are not uncommon.
Please see the webpages for more details on Hepatitis.

Are you turning yellow yet?

Hepatitis means inflammation of the liver and it has several types and a lot of different causes.

Here is some solid information on it from the NIDDK - the NIH agency that researches the condition.
