The answer doesn't surprise me because there are a lot more "professing" believers than atheists. Many people either don't go to church or if they go to one it's a "gospel lite" church where they don't preach against sin because they don't want to offend anyone.

Now if you compared the number of people who are members of the church I attend who are now in prison with the same comparative number of a random sampling of atheists I think you would find that the ratio of atheists far outnumbers the ratio of members of my church who are in prison.

"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?' And then will I declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.' Matthew 7:21-23

I believe it is 75% Christian. Not remembering for the moment where I last read that, but it's pretty close. Then again, I think our country is 75% Christian, so that about makes it a wash. lol

I didn't research (and won't), but I would suspect that in the U.S., where 95% of the population expresses belief in God, that most inmates would be theists.

They say Christian so it will look good in front of the parole board. It's like asking people in prison if they are innocent, most will say they are innocent, that doesn't mean they are.

There are fewer atheists and fewer in prison.

Plus with no belief in being "forgiven" if you do bad things, most non religious who are good people act like it.
