if a gay guy joined the military but kept his personal preferences to himself for his civilian life, would you think it would be ok for him to be in the military? even while he is int the "closet", what type of challenges do you think he will face?

I think that anyone should be able to join. Now the reality is that there are allot of homo-phobes in the Military, especially in certain jobs. I served in the Infantry and met allot of rednecks and pecker woods and it is really how they are raised. Allot of them become Friends with black people for the first time when they join up. And unfortunately not many "enlightened" people want to sign up for the jobs in the Army that have you crawling through the mud the the pecker woods are needed. But a closet gay might not have a bad go at being in the military I wouldn't necessarily suggest making it a career because you probably would like to have an open life and the military at the present is not accepting of that.

As to the comments in here about the showers and whatnot gayness isn't catchy. If I was taking a shower next to a gay guy and he said nice package I'd say "Thanks dude".

I think they should be allowed to serve their country if that's their wish. As far as their personal preferences, do striaght people sign up and say "I'm straight, I'm straight." Gay people don't want to join the military to find a date. Do you think that the ones that are serving in Iraq right now are looking at the other men and thinking about sex? I don't think so. Gay people are no different then striaght people. Just like you don't oogle over every person of the opposite sex that you see, neither do gay people. I think it's absurd that they can't join the military because of something so stupid. Are the others THAT threatened that someone might look at them? Like I said, they're not looking for a date.

He/She wouldnt face any challenges if they keep it to themselves. I am in the military and there are some military members that you can tell may possible be gay but as long as they follow the "dont ask, dont tell" policy they will be fine. If it is found that a person is openly gay then they will be discharged.

Gay men (and women!) should be allowed to join the military openly. It's ridiculous to have a don't ask don't tell policy. However, i do believe if an openly gay man joined the military, he would have to deal with a lot of problems with other homophobic soliders. But, that should be his choice to make.

My thought on this is .a person should be able to do what ever they want .if they are gay that's there business ,so don't flog it in other peoples faces .by broadcasting it you create problems not solve them .I am not saying don't come out of the closet but also don't throw it in every ones face .that didn't ask for it in the first place .everyone has a personnel secret of some sort but not everyone broadcasts it .

I don't think its fair. I am straight and wish i could go join an army of women and shower and train and sleep with them. I would sign up tomorrow.

Gays belong decorating interiors or fashion comentary. Sex & military does not mix. I want the soldiers focus on only one thing. That goes for straights as well.

My opinion is if a gay person were to be found out he would no longer be safe.

They DO serve, you don't see them because they are "in the closet". Its always been this way.
