I think it is rude to ask "what's your name". So is "what are you?" or "what do you do for a living?"

So, how do you politely ask a person his name and calling?

well, usually, if you say,

"hi, my name is ______ _____" the other person will tell you his/her name.

by the same token, if you say, " I am a musician" most people will tell you what they do.

BUT, i don't consider either of those 2 questions to be rude, except in rare circumstances.

Say Hi my name is (insert your name here) and yours is? As for asking him what he does for a living just gotta wait for the right instance in a conversation to ask that kinda thing

My name is.... then leave it open for them to reply with the same.

I don't think we have been introduced, my name is.... same again.

Not so sure about the job thing. Hard to be indirect if you actually want an answer to that question. Perhaps offer up what you do and see if they take the bait, again!

don't be silly, most people are glad you asked, and if you ask about what they do they are usually only too happy to tell you about it, some times way too happy to tell you all about it for hours and hours and hours telling you about it until you are wondering if there is a polite way to say "aw shut up already"

"Excuse me, I did not catch your name".

"That is an interesting name, what is your heritage?"

"I am a student, what do you do?"
