Interesting challenge since the perception of reality without the artificial lines that man draws is part of that path.

1) Disinterest in spiritual pursuits
2) Ritual
3) Meaning
4) Practice
5) Disillusionment
6) Despair
7) Seeking
8) Experimentation
9) Satisfaction with choice
10) (repeat steps 4 through 9 several times)
11) Simplification
12) Know thyself
13) Lightening self
14) The hunt
15) Disrobing
16) Giving up
17) Know too much
18) (repeat stages 14 through 17 several times)
18a) Think you are past all of that (repeat stages 14 through 17 several times)
19) Freedom from all but desire for "God/Nirvana/etc."
20) Realization that you can't ever have "God/Nirvana/etc.", ever!
21) Realization that you know too much and can never give up the hunt, can never go back to pretending in a religion or other construct. You are trapped and yet unresentful of the trap. You can never achieve your aim, but cannot retreat into despair or hopelessness.
22) Complete surrender of the self-image to God
23) No you, only God.

24) Back. Why? Come with me, those that want to. You aren't alone. There is a way, at least one. I've been there. Come with me. I love all of you.

Does that help? I'm sure there are minor stages between, or more specific examples people could make, but this is pretty much the pattern for most. Many would stop the process at where ever they are. That serves the purposes of God/Creation/Reality as well. Have to be some.

Keep searching.

The Sufis say there are seven stages, but I cannot name them.
To me, there are only two,
1) The letting go of the ego, striving for purification,
(which may take your whole life)
2) And unity with God ( when the drop (of water) becomes the sea.

love is like a little boat upon the ocean
everything runs in a circular motion

including and especially spirituality

at the onset i must realize the need that thereis something much greater than i that i am capable of turning my life and my will over to

i need to believe this higher power is indeed a higher power and be willing to turn my life and my will over to it

i need to feel the effects of this higher power

i need to develop a close personal relationship with my higher power

giving my higher power a name, thus begins religion, where i will begin to feel compelled to say, "my god is better than your god"

there are five stages:

realize the need

believe

feel

develop

religion

and it is all set in motion...circular motion...oftentimes when we get to the point of religion we become stagnant...sometimes we have a spiritual awakening then we find ourselves somewhere else in the cycle...however, it seems we all ways allow our spirituality to trickle on down to religion...where there is hypocrisy, where my god is better than yours, where it is so easy to lose sight of the need for the deep close personal relationship with whatever i have chosen to turn my life and my will over to

whatever i have chosen to turn my life and my will over to

need
believe
feel
develop
religion
