I have a friend who has Korean citizenship, and was born in the year 1990. He wants to become an American citizen, and has an aunt who is willing to adopt him officially as a son. He currently lives with his Korean father in Korea.

My question is, if his aunt does officially adopt my friend as a son, then will he recieve automatic citizenship?

Thanks!

No, thank god American citizenship is not automatic. It's bad enough that we have open borders with Canada and Mexico. At least there isn't a loophole like citizenship through adoption. The aunt can sponsor the nephew for legal immigration. I believe that all the paperwork must be completed and processed before he turns 18 years old. I'm a 3rd generation Chinese-American, who have aunts, uncles and cousins immigrate legally through direct familial sponsorship. After 9/11, the immigration process is much more difficult and takes years to complete. The aunt would have to sign a document that makes her responsible for his actions (legal/illegal) if his application would be approved. Also, he would only get a Green Card until he is permitted to apply for citizenship after many years of working/residing in U.S.
