I have an old dog and i feed her Purina bacon daily. But i'm afraid it'll be too salty for her, and her kidneys will not be able to handle it in the long term. Any suggestions for healthy snacks for dogs? Pls give me the brand names as well. Thanks.

Nutro has a great line of healthy treats and I like their dog food best of all the other brands I've fed over the years. Any changes in diet should be made slowly to avoid diarrhea - gradually mix more new food in with what you've been using until she's switched over.

I don't like to buy commercial treats because of the high salt and general *crap* content in most of them, and the outrageous prices they want for the good ones.

My dogs get carrots, green beans, peas, small bits of apple or tomato, boiled (boneless, skinless) chicken, good cuts of beef, boiled or poached egg, plain yogurt, pasta, and rice. (I have to feed my Bulldog a salt-free, raw diet to help avoid water-puppies.) No salt, grease, chocolate, grapes, raisins, avocados, or onions. My Bulldog can't have corn, either. I also use peanut butter when I have to give them medication.

Be sure to try one new food at a time, in small amounts, because food allergies can be fairly common in dogs. If in doubt over a food's safety, call your vet and ask. They'll be happy to tell you whether it's okay or not.

All the best to you and your dog!

Carrots, peanut butter in a Kong, most of the snacks that are healthy for us are healthy for your dog. Just no onions, grapes, raisins, or chocolate. And don't give anything extremely salty or anything greasy.
