Dual citizenship or multiple citizenship is a status in which a person is concurrently regarded as a citizen under the laws of more than one state.
Dual citizenship (being a citizen of two nations), or dual nationality, is by far the most common type of multiple citizenship, as nothing in international law prevents anyone from establishing citizenship in two countries. Some countries do not recognise its citizens as having nationality of any other country, or recognise so only in certain circumstances (e.g. Japan recognises only those of underage nationals). Others may recognise as many nationalities as a citizen has.

I have dual citizenship. I was born in the USA and am a naturalized Canadian citizen. I live in Canada. I can think of no disadvantages of this. It is very nice. I can go freely back and forth between both countries and neither can deny me entry. I am treated very well by both borders. Someone posted here that this will no longer be recognized by the US soon and that is not true. The USA cannot deny me my US citizenship unless I have ever done anything against the US and Canada cannot deny me, either, unless I have ever done anything against Canada. I could even have a criminal charge in Canada, but that could not prevent my being able to enter the USA. Likewise, I could have a criminal charge in the USA and that could not prevent my being able to enter Canada. You only lose your American citizenship if, upon taking a new citizenship you give up your previous citizenship, and I did not do this when I took Canadian citizenship. Or, if you work in a government position in which you cannot hold a dual citizenship.

When I enter the USA, I hand the customs officer my Canadian citizenship card, my US birth certificate and my Canadian drivers' license and I am told to stay as long as I want! Ha! When I return to Canada, I am told the same thing. It is the best of both worlds, for sure!

The advantage of having dual citizenship is the opportunity to have 2 passports. Many Americans who have dual citizenship, now travels with the "foreign" passport especially in the middle east, Indonesia, etc. In the past, people also used one passport to enter Israel, and when they continue their travel to Arab countries, they would pull out the 2nd passport without the Israeli seal.
Dual citizenship in the U.S. will not be permitted by January 2007, and we will need a valid U.S. Passport to re-enter the U.S. from Canada and Mexico. These are ALL safeguards for us after 9/11.
