Most will. Except for arts like Capoeira which is more for show. Taekwondo is pretty good (but I only say that because I do it). Taekwondo is the martial art of the Korean national army.

Krav Mega is very brutal and I think the best for street fighting. It is the martial art of the Israeli national army.

As soon as the fight hits the ground, you are probably best with Jiujitsu. Although, you should never let a fight get to the ground because you are vulnerable but it is good to be prepared for anything.

Every single form of martial arts can help you in "real life fighting" if you know what you are doing. I had a karate instructor who once who told me that when two people meet in a fight, usually, the one who knows his or her craft better will win. This means that if you know how to box better than I know karate, then you would probably beat me. If you have studied several styles, it would do no good in a real fight against someone who knows street fighting inside and out. The best thing to do is study more than one style, but try to focus on one, and work on mastering it. I prefer Tai-Chi myself due to its deceptive slow form. The secret is learning to do the form to perfection as slow as you can, then in a real life fight, you would be able to reproduce those moves at lightening speed, without thought. The principle applies to all martial arts though. Just master one, and it will be a huge advantage in a real life fight. However, true martial arts masters will always tell you to avoid a fight as best as you can. Save the fighting for when negotiations have completely failed. You have nothing to prove by destroying someone just because you know some karate or whatever, because you will always find someone who knows more. Hope that helps.

Mixed Martial Arts for the simple reason of being a well rounded fighter http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/mixed_marti... I am currently going for
Muay Thai: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/muay_thai...
Gracie Jiu Jitsu: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/gracie_jiu-...
is really all you need in my personal preference. This way they mesh together well because in brazilian Jiu Jitsu you use your fists elbows and simple ground and pound hits with submission moves and Muay Thai one of the best striking or stand up arts in the world. The Karate and tae kwon do kung fu whatever else i missed people will not let a thai boxer in their tournaments. Its all about being able to take the fight well on the ground and standing up especially in the streets. In the streets people neglect any grappling or ground fighting which is a weakness. You tell me if you can close the gap and throw a guy on the cement or worse asphualt or w/e it spelled its going to hurt him and that gives you time to grounjd and pound em.

Tae Kwan Do is a sport if learned US style while Korean is more self defense.
But yes, Martial Arts will help as any training will help. Boxing will if the fight is a fair fight, but in a real street fight, forget boxing.

Technically any kind of martial arts help in real life fighting. The reason for that is because by training on martial art, you get to develop body condition including physical strength and agility to help your body to react in a fighting situation, as well as some techniques to offense and defense. However, having only the physical condition and knowing some "super moves" are not the main factor to survive in a real fight. In order to win this "survival game", mindset is much more important than the amount of "killing moves" you know. For example, teach an animal lover how to shoot and give him a hunting rifle to hunt is pretty pointless. Even though the animal lover has the physical condition (the rifle in this case) and the technique to hunt (know how to shoot), but because he is not willing to kill any animal, you will not expect him to be able to hunt anything. It is the same thing in real life fighting. Learning martial art will be able to help you in real fight only if:
(1) you are willing to fight;
(2) you have the guts to fight;

In my 20 years of experience practicing martial arts, I had seen black belts people lost to a lower rank students because their mind is not ready to fight; I had seen martial art master who got beat by new practicers becuase the master was not used to fight. I am sure many of you had seen or heard someone who had never practice any martial art and was able to beat someone who had years of martial art experience. So, the type of martial arts is really doesn't matter, the mindset is the main element to help you in a fight. Until you have the mindset, techniques and the body condition will not be counted.

To train the mind, experience does play a big role. When you know what you are doing, you definitly have less fear. With less fear, your mind is more clear, which helps your body to function better. Sparring training is a very good practice to earn experience. Consider sparring is a simulated fight in a controlled environment, both your mind and your body is learning how to react to different situations in fight. I had seen many martial art schools and instructors refuse to have sparring or any kind of combat form training, which I found very bad to their students. Students in that case had only learned how to position their arms and legs, but they are lack of experience on using the techniques they had learned. This is just like teaching someone how to drive a car but does not allow him to get into the car. So, try to avoid these kind of schools and instructors if you want to learn martial arts.

In a fight, you will need all the mindset, the physical and the technique to ensure your winning. And out of the all three, mindset plays the most important to make your physical condition and techniques count. Any kind of martial art that trains you on this concept, will surely helps you in real life fighting.

Karate is the most basic form of self defense and can only help you in simple situations. There are much more complex and dangerous martial arts that are very old...

All help, the one that helps most is the one that is becomes second
nature, the one that becomes part of you,and you part of it.

The rules of street fighting:
Avoid fighting unless there is no choice
Watch your footing, slipping can cost you more than just the fight
Nothing flashy,this is not a movie,be practial,nothing risky
If your opponent is disabled leave a.s.a.p.
Don't talk ,be professional,do not allow yourself to be distracted
Do not turn your back to your opponent, not even for one second
Do not be a gentleman, your opponent is not one
Do not hold back, your opponent will not
Do not "over pound" your opponent, secure your safety, get away

............................ Multiple opponents..............................................
Avoid this at all cost
Find a wall, this is your best friend,it is one direction you don't have to watch

Think fast, break the leg of the closest opponent
Try to disable each opponent with a single move, this means getting dirty.

STAY OFF THE GROUND,stay on your feet, all above rules apply

Stay focused, there will not be a second chance.

I lost a street fight once with multiple opponents due to a baseball bat to my head as I was waking they were driving their car over me.
Do you need to hear more?
Avoid street fights at all cost,if you must fight, you must win.

I use Supuraae no Togarashi. It's a secret ancient Japanese art that was invented by Hattogarashi himself. Very effective in real life combat but few people know of it. ;)
