There are simulation programs that predict the byproducts of chemical reactions.

It is like a huge sealed pressure cooker that you can put chemicals in and heat up so that they react together. It gives the chance to exclude things that would interfere with the reaction that you desire(like oxygen). They also let you regulate the heat and pressure because some reactions only occur under certain pressures and at specific temperatures. They are common in making oil resins for paint and in crude oil refining. I am not sure where else they are used besides oil processing. Isocyanates for painting and for glues are made this way and most acrylic resins are from this type of process too I think.
