Virus classification
Group: Group I (dsDNA)
Family: Herpesviridae
Subfamily: Alphaherpesvirinae
Genus: Simplexvirus
Species: Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1)
Species: Herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2)
The herpes simplex virus (HSV) (also known as Cold Sore, Night Fever, or Fever Blister) is a virus that manifests itself in two common viral infections, each marked by painful, watery blisters in the skin or mucous membranes (such as the mouth or lips) or on the genitals. The disease is contagious, particularly during an outbreak, and is incurable with present technology. Research has currently shown that a person can still be contagious (actively shedding virus) up to 7-10 days after the blister has healed.[citation needed] During this time, the asymptomatic person should be extremely careful (washing hands frequently; not touch the blister area, etc.) since transmission is still possible. An infection on the lips is commonly known as a "cold sore" or "fever blister". These are sometimes confused with canker sores or Apthous ulcers which have a similar appearance; these appear inside the mouth and are not caused by the herpes simplex virus.

There is alot of speculation around cold sores as to why you get them. Yes if you have the herpes virus, if you kiss someone that has one.. What people dont realise is that cold sores can also occur from stress!
If you feel more stressed then usual and you dont normally get them, that could be why!

I do all the time! If you do here are some remedies:
1. If you can detect it before it appears place ice over it.
2. Use Carmex ($1 or less at Wal-Mart)
3. Talk to your doctor about perscription medicine that will take about 4 days off.
4. My mom always told me to drink water...and I always have because if it'll help I'll do it!
5. Or you could buy Abreva which is really expensive.

Only the people that have the virus...it's the herpes virus, just on your lips. You don't just randomly get them unless you kiss someone who has it or you go down on someone who has the other kind of herpes.
