No, they are not a birth defect. A dominant gene causes dimples. One of the parents must have the dominant gene for a child to also have dimples.

The attachment of the human skin to muscles is what causes dimples.

Dimples are valued in our society as we think that they are cute! Actually, and you don't have to tell anyone this, they are a "birth defect." By that I mean that muscles in your face, and perhaps other areas of one's body, are shorter than in most people. Therefore they pull on the skin and form the indentation that you and so many other people have. Sometimes the muscles lengthen during life and the dimples disappear or lessen as we age. Lots of babies have them but many don't continue to have them as they grow up. So, even though they are not "normal", they are not a serious "defect" and as I said, many people would like to have them. So, display them often as you smile!
Consider them a birth asset.... not a birth defect !

Dimples are cute. Stupidity and rudeness might be a birth defect though. At least it would be reassuring to think that someone wasn't like that on purpose. Don't worry about that kind of stuff.

What's defective about them? A defect, by defintion, is bad or wrong. Dimples are neither. If anything, they're a recessive trait...kinda like having a second toe longer than your big toe. You wouldn't ever think to call your second toe defective, would you?

Dimples are not defects. Smile and wear them proudly.

Honey, if you have them, use them as much as you can! Because the only people that will tell you they are birth defects are the jealous ones that don't have them! I have them too, they are a birth defect actually, but, what a wonderful defect to have, think of the compliments you get on your beautiful smile!

It's not a defect, it's just something that you inherit. You either have dimples or you don't, just like people who can't roll their tongue and people who can.

I don't, by the way, which is weird. Most people seem to have at least small dimples.
