The concept was first used in bolt action rifles such as the Thorneycroft carbine of 1901, and is known to have been applied to semi-automatic firearms no later than 1936, the year a bullpup pistol was patented by the Frenchman Henri Delacre. A 7.62 mm caliber experimental assault rifle was developed by Korovin in the Soviet Union in 1945. The EM2 was adopted by the United Kingdom in 1951 as the world's first (limited) service bullpup rifle; the nation had been considering the idea of a bullpup service rifle since 1944.

Bullpups actually go back to the 1950's The British were designing a new service rifle the EM-2 in.280 British. However, due to NATO & the US fighting over service rounds, the gun was shelved in favor of the FN-FAL in the new NATO standard 7.62mm. The Austrian weapon your thinking about is the Styer AUG. Other Noteable Bullpups are the current UK made L85, the French FAMAS, and the new FN- f2000.
