I went to the doctor yesterday, and they tested my urine for a infection. While doing so they discovered I had 5% protein in my urine. They sent me home with a container to do a 24hr collection. What does this mean? Should I be concerned? What could it mean?

I had this before and no, its not normal. You're not getting enough protein in your diet and/or your kidneys aren't functioning correctly. I wouldn't have any concern until you bring the collection of urine to your doctor and they tell you what's wrong.

Protein is not normally found in large quantities in the urine. However, the presence of protein in the urine can indicate a multitude of disorders.

Urine protein is roughly divided into urine albumin and globulins. Urine protein electrophoresis may be recommended to help determine the cause of protein in the urine or as a screening test to measure the various proteins in urine.
This test is most often performed when kidney disease is suspected. It may be used as a screening test.

Normally, protein is not found in urine when a routine dipstick test is performed. This is because the kidney is supposed to keep large molecules, such as protein, in the blood and only filter out smaller impurities. Even if small amounts of protein do get through, they are normally re-absorbed by the body and used as a source of energy.

Some proteins will appear in the urine if the levels of protein in blood become high, even when the kidney is functioning properly.

If the kidney is diseased, protein will appear in the urine -- even if the blood levels are normal.

Fill up the 24 hour collection container and bring it back to your doctor...PRONTO! Protein in your urine is not normal. Yes, it could signal an infection but it could also mean that your kidneys or heart need looking at. Get to your doc as soon as your 24 hours is up and do as she/he says!

It is not normal and it could be caused by an infection. Fill the 24 hour bottle and get it back to them. They will want to have a look at how that one turns out. There may be some issues that occur at one time of day but not others.
Follow what the doctor says. They are trying to get it sorted out for you now.

Yes, very much so. They are taking a 24 hour urinee sample from you to test for all kinds of possibilities. Blood in your urin means a UTI (urinary track infection), or to see if you have poison in you system, if you are a guy, it could mean other very bad things, you really should call you doctors office and have them explain to you why they are doing this, what do they suspect.
