Well, to know for sure you could have an MRI done. I had one on my knee when they thought I might have torn something and everything was fine, it was just a bit of swelling. My knee took about eight months to fully heal with that (this was after a fall) and I'm in the twenties, so if it is a tear, I would imagine it would take a little longer.

I just had arthroscopic surgery in May for torn cartilage. Torn cartilage does not heal. And letting it go only gets worse. You will always have pain and inflammation. You have to have an MRI to determine what is really going on. I had torn meniscus. The arthroscopic surgery is a same day procedure. You can go home in a few hours. I had to use crutches for about a week but what a difference. It was well worth it. I work in a nursing home and I just couldn't stand the knee pain any longer.

If it really is torn cartilege then resting will not really help. It will feel better for a while but it will never really heal. Try rest, ice, compression and elevation - it will relieve most of the pain but not heal it completely. Get more doctor's opinions though, it can't hurt right??

Torn meniscus cartilage is a result of wear and tear. It won't go away. Sometimes the knee will "lock" in position and will be hard to bend or straighten.

If it bothers you a lot get the surgery. If not, then wait till it gets worse.

Keep on exercising--walking, bike riding, etc.

ice, elevate, antiinflammatorys if not allergic to or have ulcers. try non impact exercise such as swimming. but take a week off first to let heal. does it get swollen and feel like jello around the knee?
2nd opinion is always good. was your doctor and family practice or specialist? makes a big difference

When surgery or something as delicate as your knees are in question, always get a second and third opinion.
