Latin America was historically gold rich. I am sure that the gold capping began with indigenous dentistry (with the curanderos.) The Aztecs were very skilled in metal work...as were the Mayans. I've seen this trend with more than Mexicans...it's all over the world, mostly in tribal or indigenous societies. When you get out in the world, these "things" are really nothing special. Most Europeans can identify US Americans by their straight bleached teeth. Preferences are preferences...

Because you're so used to seeing such cavity ridden smiles (the first thing you see in the morning when you look in the mirror), not to mention the first smile you saw on yo mama's face when you were born...When you see a brilliant smile with perfect teeth, you think it's gold. It's just an illusion sweetie... Practice good dental hygiene and you'll soon have that brilliant smile you've been longing for...And I don't even want to talk about that skanky breath of yours.
I hope I'm not being rude.

My dentist answered this question for me a few years ago. When Mexicans go home, they are proud to show their family still living in Mexico how well they have done in the United States. And, since many Mexicans living in Mexico cannot afford dental work, it is a sign of prosperity to have golden crowns. That shows everyone that you have done so well that you can even afford expensive American dental work. It is a source of pride and admiration for the Mexican.

Same reason everyone else who puts gold crowns on their front teeth do it!! That has been around for years, and the Mexicans are hardly the only group that does it!

This is a common style in all Latin America. I have also seen it in the South in the USA. It's so funny because I've always wanted one and my family always flipped out and said only "cholos" wear gold teeth.

ACTUALLY...
That is done because in Mexico, it's cheaper if you need to get a tooth fixed. Since american dentists have evolved quite a bit, we have the choice of having silver fillings to clear or natural tooth colored fillings. A lot of them got this done years ago, so back then all they had was a choice of silver or gold fillings.
People are so ignorant.
