In the next few days approaching, they schedule me for a Psychiatric evaluation for a position as a Correctional Officer. As you probably may be familiar with the complicated phases of obtaining a law enforcement position. I already passed my background check, interview (that was intense, 5 personnel in a small room interviewed me, and the questions were mostly targets at my past )
and I still have to pass my psychiatric & physical.

My question to you is, if you went thought the hiring process . . . During this phase with the doctor, what kind of questions he or she might ask? How do I conduct myself? I know you have to be yourself, but I heard from a friend that during this phase, you must be very carefully of how you say your responds. For an example, the doctor might ask you, Have you even get mad? Now . . . I know everyone to get mad at one point of their lives and I would answer yes. Nevertheless, that is not the favorable responds, and could work against you.

It is this type of questions that have me worry a bit. According to researches, they said mind doctors think very complicated. They do not think normally. If a person says, I like to eat apply.... they translate that as . . . I like to suck whatever . . . If you say A, and you really mean a they see Z.

What should I do? I really want to get this job. Any advises?

You have watched too much TV. Psychiatrists and psychologists DO NOT READ A LOT INTO WHAT YOU SAY. They take what you say at face value. Everyone gets angry, in-raged, outraged, bitter, jealous and every other negative emotion you can think of, and people in the mental health field know this. It's what you do with those feelings that counts. Don't try to out think anything he or she says or asks and you'll do fine. Don't worry about this. Get a good night's sleep before you go in. If they give you a written psychological evaluation, just answer the questions honestly and you'll do fine. You don't have a record. You passed the background check. Relax.

My mom is one of the Head Sgt. over a prison. They ask you ?'s like Do you ever get mad? You would answer yes. That makes you human. If you say you never get mad then right off the bat, your known as a liar. The questions arent that hard but put some thought into your answer as you already know, sometimes they phrase the ? differently. Another ? you will see is Do you get mad A)alot B)sometimes C) rarely
I would answer: Rarely. Get the Idea.

Just be yourself and answer calmly and directly. My ex is a state trooper. He told me that they would ask him a question in the interview and then turn around five min. later and ask the same question a different way just to see if he was being honest with them. They will catch you if you lie. He even admitted to doing illegal drugs as a teenager and they still gave him the job. I guess honesty really does pay off. After all we are all human. Just try to remain calm. Good Luck.

Don't kid yourself, Corrections in NOT law enforcement.

But, getting past that fact, be yourself and answer directly and honestly. Stick to your guns, don't change your answer just because you think the shrink wants to hear something else. Just remember, the shrink doesn't know any more than you. (most shrinks become shrinks because they are one step from insanity anyway or want to explore their own sanity).

Oh - if they ask you if there is any reason why you cannot do the job you are applying for, answer NO - (and don't elaborate)

If you are sincere about pursuing that position, I recommend you answer each question honestly. Any attempts at trying to give the answers you think they are looking for, will be immediately detected and could hurt your chances even more than by answering them truthfully, even though you think the truth may hurt you more than help. Those tests are designed not only to sniff out the bad apples, but they are used to detect integrity and honesty as well.

Some of the specific questions I remember....

* Would you like to be a florist?
* Do you love your mother? Asked several times in different forms.
* Do you love your father?
*Would you like to have sex with your Mother (or Father in another question)?
*Have you ever attempted suicide?
*Have you ever thought about committing suicide? (of course, I was an angst ridden teenager at one point. I did answer yes and I did not fail the evaluation.)
*Do you love your mother?

My psych screen was in depth but was not all that unusual. They did ask questions pertaining to temperment etc.... Just be honest and relax. It was not that bad. It did throw me when they asked if I had ever had sex with an animal. I was not expecting it. Thankfully I could say no, it never even occurred to me to do so.
