LOL...."scythe", sounds like entertainment to me! You must be from the South Dakota area.....?
some Suggestions are:
have them collect unusual look rocks, and then paint them, or,
Build a fort with all the rocks, or make a rock garden for a flower or veggie garden.....just encourage them to use their imagination in any idea they might have.....be creative , with low key science projects too. Now, please put away that scythe! lol

pack a lunch for everybody and take them to the park(they can run around and get tired out ) depending on the age buy them a cheap pool 10.00 ( at stores like Family Dollar and Dollar General) and have a play date with a bunch of kids from the neighborhood tell the parents to pack enough goodies for all the kids while at your house !! Check out club mom they have the best summer ideas that are cheap !!! Hope this helps

Sprinkler! Visit the local park. Check out local artisans... do you have basket makers, glass blowers, farmers? Kids love to go to the DPW and watch the guys clean off the trucks. Use your "free field trips" to teach lessons about history, using money, politeness & consideration, and resourcefullness. :)

rent a video of a place a fun place and have the kids dress up from that place another country or say hawaii
then have for lunch items from there.

they can act out the whole thing

I used to play a great game with my kids, its called "dodge the axe", its where I would throw tomahawks at them, and they had to try and dodge them, (it'll keep them amused for hours, or in the E.R at least)
