That is why he and only he was able to annoint the Messiah to be king of the Jews at his baptism...

John was the son of a Levite. His father was the priest tasked with offering the sacrifice of incense that year. His son would have undoubtedly been prepared by the priests to serve because of his lineage all the way to Aaron. The Messiah was not only his first cousin; he was also in the line of Levi and David. High Priest and King! Notice that Mary was Elizabeth's kin and that The Messiah's lineage is through Mary and not Joseph. Joseph's lineage had no rightful claim to the throne but Mary's line to David did. Needless to say, the method of anointing was by water and the Holy Spirit and not oil by the Baptist High Priest, John.

Well both John's parents were descendants of the priest Aaron (Moses' brother). There is no mention in the Bible of his Father being High Priest or that John would be High Priest either. But interesting thought.

wow where did you get that load from

first off a persons tribal linage comes from his father and his father only. Their is not a single verse that says the mother carries the line.

even if you wanted to say that Mary caused Jesus to be from the house of David then he could not be a Levite at the same time. To say that he could would mean that everyone was a member of all the tribes and that is simply not true.

Thats a lie. He knew that He was getting the people ready for Jesus. He and Jesus were first cousins. Bet you didn't know that!

John 3:30 He must increase, but I must decrease

This was John talking about how He must decrease in his teachings, and Jesus takes over and increases with His own teachings of what John had already prepared the people for.

i once met john the baptist on an overseas flight to scotland. he said all that **** was overblown, people were simply hot and a little dusty and it seemed like a good idea to bathe that day. he said mentioning god was an after thought. he said he gave up the high priest role possibility cause he wasn't into politics.

Since that is a job for the High Priest, wouldn't that be the job of...the High Priest? Why do you say "he and only he?" Why the guy "next-in-line?" Or was he third in line? Or 14th???

well, that's not precisely how it works. interestingly, he never WAS the high priest, and never actually anointed jesus with the proper oil. so much for that theory...
