I work in a convenience store and have noticed that nearly all the prices end in 9. Why can't something be $1.65 instead of $1.69? $1 instead of .99? You see this on infomercials too. Every price ends with a 9. WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?

Historically, I believe that prices were not whole dollar amounts to insure that salespeople had to route the customer's payment to a central change maker, thus insuring that payments weren't pocketed.

In modern times, these sorts of prices attempt to make you think you're getting something more cheaply -- figuring that you'll equate $1.99 with a dollar, rather than two dollars.

How weird, I just read this yesterday. Although most people think it's to make the prices seem lower to the consumer it is actually just leftover from the days of old cash registers that did not keep track of the tender(cash) in the drawer. Charging an off dollar amount forced the clerk to open the drawer to make change, thus making it harder to just pocket the cash.

I heard that the reason it ends in a "9" like $.99 is because people would rather pay $.99 for something instead of $1.00. But I agree with you.

I think it is for the marketing purposes, makes u think that ur buying something for 19 dullars, when in fact it is 20 (if the price is 19.99). The other thing is a bit less tax to pay, really adds up for big companies.

They dont want to go to the next dollar because its like a psychology thing. people will buy things if the dollar is cheaper because even though its only a penny it still makes a difference in people's eyes.. for example:
say you go to a store and see something for $10.00
and you see the same thing for $9.99, which would you go for? probably the $9.99 because it seems cheaper to you. :)
-and the reason for them not ending in .95 is because of inflation everything costs more now

It is marketing ploys! You see, when you look at the price of (4.99), your mind sees 4 and some lose change, where as when you look at the price of 5.00, your mind sees a whole 5 dollar bill, and you freak out thinking, wow, that's expensive! Isn't that weird how that works?!!

It's a marketing ploy. If something is priced $9.99 the mind perceives it as WAY cheaper than $10.00.
