He has been potty trained for almost a year and now is having frequent accidents. when we are in a public place like a store or whatnot there is no problem except the fact he wants to go every 15 minutes or so. but at home he will sometimes go into the potty by himself and go just fine, other times he will just stand in the middle of the room and wet himself. any suggestion would be nice.
thank you in advance for all your help.

When I showed him how to do it standing up he was sold and thought it was the greatest thing. His mother and I are happily married for 3 years. He is seeing a speach therapist and a occupational therapist for some developmental delays and sensory isssues, nothing real bad just some things that needed some help. So I'm thinking it may have something to do with sensory seeking. I don't know. We also have a 2 year old who is doing pretty good on potty training, can go most of the day in underwear, his choice, with just a few accidents at night. I also have 10 and 1/2 year old step-son.

Dont make a big deal out of it, ALL kids regress when it comes to potty training. It is just part of the process!! But definitly dont get mad at him or make a big deal or a scene when he has an "accident".....just remind him when he does have an accident that he needs to tell you BEFORE he has to go potty that way you can take him to the bathroom and he wont "ruin" his cool underwear!! Good Luck, and dont stress about it too much, it is completely normal!

I agree with kaydeedid, this is often a sign of an emotional problem. Have you gotten a new boyfriend/girlfriend? Do you leave him with a sitter alot to go out (not work). Is he afraid and can't tell you something? and on and on. There are SO MANY things kids think they CAN'T tell us, but having a 3 year old mindset is not a crime, it just limits their ability to understand that WE will not punish them for something someone ELSE may have done and said was THEIR FAULT. You get my drift? He simply may be afraid. It just sounds like he feels safe outside the HOME. Actually, OUTSIDE the bathroom.

Be patient and love him when he does this, tell him you understand and that if something is scaring him to please tell you and you will make the "big bad" go away. NO MATTER WHO OR WHAT IT IS, then mean it. He's 1/2 you, and you can understand how confused he must be to do this. After all, he's been so good in the past.

I also suggest going to the Public Library and getting books on Childhood Development, browse through the index looking for "potty training" and perhaps "Behavioral regression"

Good luck, you sound like a very caring parent, he's lucky to have you!

has anything changed in his schedule? have you started working more hours or not been able to spend as much time with him as you use to? Has something at preschool or home or family changed? Little boys are funny things the least little change can upset their whole system I have 3 and have been in your shoes, if his schedule has changed explain it to him and let him know why if this continues you might need to see your family doctor little boys get UTI's too and that might be his problem, he will grow out of this for right now give him a little extra time and remind him that he is a big boy now and he must go potty when he need to so that he won't have accidents. You might also try setting a kitchen timer for 30 minute intervals and at the bell he needs to go try to potty this might work.

My oldest did the same thing, and now he is getting closer to four but still has a few accidents.
Don't yell at him or get mad.
My oldest boy was comfortable at home, he knows his surroundings well, he still doesn't like public places and would rather pee on a tree then go into a public bathroom...He is getting better when I go to the store the minute he says he has to potty I have to run to the bathroom and make sure he makes it, cause he tends to wait a little longer to tell me that he has to go when we aren't at home.....
Its was the same when he had to poop, if anyone was in the room he would come over and whisper to me that he had to poop and I would have to go to the bathroom with him, just to make sure he was comfortable.
Now he goes upstairs and when he is ready to get help wiping he yells at the top of his lungs "Mommy I went poop, come here, you need to wipe me "
believe me its really funny, expecially when we have company.
it will get easier, just be patient...bring some extra clothes and underpants.
My oldest also didn't like telling anyone other than me when he had to go, so there were a lot of accidents when dad had to watch him...just help change him and keep telling him he needs to go to the bathroom..I also had to sit on the bathtub for a month and set my son on the toilet, wait till he was done and then move on.

Children often regress during times of duress. Is there something in his life that could be causing him to stress or worry? Don't make a big deal out of it, it's just a little pee after all. Be patient, the problem will most likely resolve itself.

is there some major change going on in his life right now? regression is usually caused by stress or pressure, if not just by plain distractedness. if this is a pattern, you have to take a look and see what is going on to cause the upheaval in his little world.
