What you described is Perfect. This is the custom.
Also, do not tilt the soup bowl to get to the last drop - or scrape at the bottom of the bowl to make a sound. No clinking of the cutleries either. All this is supposed to be polite and in a formal setting. It is also being considerate of person sitting next to you.
Otherwise, in an informal place just be yourself. But drinking soup as the way you have described + the additional details I have given make it very elegant. Classy.
Another thing about napkins: When you get up from your chair (for whatever reason), excuse yourself, and place the napkin on the seat and not on the table. You do not want to show your dirty linen to others. This is just being polite, that's all.

Place a napkin in your lap, sit up straight. Using a soup spoon, scoop the soup away from you, just skimming the top layer of what's in the bowl, and sip from the side of the spoon so that it's perpendicular to your mouth. And of course, no noise, this is how a refined lady eats soup.

you hold the bowl in both hands and tip toward your lips to slurp. i don't know who these heathens are that want the use of spoons. when you're finished you run your finger around the bowl to make sure you got all the goodies.

In Japan it seems you have to MAKE AS MUCH NOISE AS POSSIBLE - as a westerner here I can't even go into a soup house

Well, using a fork is probably not the best idea... I'm pretty sure chopsticks are not a good idea.... I suppose you could snort it.... but given a choice, i'd use a spoon.
