Ok, I am in the midst of buying a new home and it needs some repairs. I can't really afford the big guys so I need some help with the contruction. Its light work like painting, redoing the wood floors, putting up a fence and possibly a deck. You know stuff like that. Now heres the question, do you think it is wise for me to ask family for help? Dont get me wrong I dont mind paying but when I asked one of my relatives for some help today, the first thing out of his mouth was "HOW MUCH YOU PAYING"?

I don't think it is bad to hire family to help. I think it would probably be cheaper for you, but will you love them when it is over?

The only problem with hiring family is they could do a bad job, or mess something up and it ends up costing you more than it would've in the 1st place. Then you have to worry about your family ticked off at you or any other negative feelings that come of it.

It also depends on your family. Only you know their personalities and if they're good with their own house repairs or not.

i have found that hiring family is not the best way to go. the best thing to do would be on the wood floors find someone(a professional) to come in and sand the floors that is the hardest part of it. you can finish the wood yourself it is not hard at all to stain it and then seal it you can get all the materials at your local hardware store. and the painting is the easiest of all. the fence would be cheaper to find a fence installer they get the material cheaper than you or i could get it. most of the time the price to do it yourself is more than what it would cost for them to do it.

Hiring family is okay, but do it in a way that you would hiring a stranger. Signed contract stating what will be done in what length of time and for how much. I don't like hourly rates, because they tend to take a few to many breaks. Instead set a price for the finished job.

im a painter and friends and family are always asking for help. the bottom line is time is money i can get paid good for anouther job or help you for a little. the answer is in the question usualy. a rule of thumb i follow is i would do anything for my parents for no money , i owe them everything other family, well only the ones that help me. i would pay a little token amount or a good gift for those that return favors of course, good luck.

If they are asking about payment stay away from it. Never do business with family.

When I am getting help from family the payment is usually a casual dinner and refreshments after the work is done. No money is involved.

Good advice here-- I vote no family-- the unstated things hurt the friendship/family-- just look for a less expensive worker-- or save your money for a while and get the more expensive.
good luck
