because people want to validate their beliefs by having others believe them as well.
It is my firm belief that humans have a herd instinct. that whatever the herd is doing they will eventually do too. peer pressure what ever. We want like to be with like. we want to organize our world so that we feel more comfortable with our surroundings. We fear the unknown. it is fairly uncomfortable when you are in a room and everyone else disagrees with you, now isn't it. now with that being said on to the answer.
I believe mutual respect is a valid goal and one that is needed desperately. I may or may not agree with 100% of what you say or believe but what right is it of mine to judge and attack you for it. I'm no worse or better than you in this aspect of life. Also I will fight to the death for your right to say it regardless if I agree or not.
On the other hand it is hard to respect those who don't respect you in return. I know this sounds childish and immature but it is true. If someone or some group is attacking your belief our a group of people you identify with, would you find it easy to respect them?
It truly is a two way street.

Yes it is to bad that people don't just respect others beliefs, you know agree to disagree. And there will be no need for anyone to say "I told you so." Truth is an individual thing. Because your mind is so powerful, what you believe in your mind is what is truth for you, because your belief is what creates it to be true, but only for you.

You know, this question has been asked through and through. See any concrete results? I don't want to burst your bubble, but unless there is a miraculous massive wake-up call tomorrow, I'm not so sure.

What it takes to change the world is a series of small actions, individually.

I'd like to see it happen as much as you do, but don't be too optimistic. Mentalities are a hard thing to change.

Yes..."Can't we all just get along?" It will take many combined truths to form one whole truth.
