A demerit is a system by which you actions and the actions of your class, are rated.

Much like Harry Potter, where the points go towards winning the House Cup, for the military, it works against you in the manner of awards (like weekend leave, for example).

You can work demetis off by (usually) walking the parade grounds for a fixed amount of time for a certain amount of demerits worked off.

Some places are suspending the demerit system

it's a system designed to guarantee fair evaluation of people. a demerit is equivalent of a bad mark, or bad grade for a transgression of some kind. some places would institute a system where you were allowed only so many demerits before you were expelled. that way, it was not possible for wealthy or influential people to appeal the expulsion, because it was done based on an objective/unbiased system where the expelled student/cadet was removed because he had received the number of demerits, not for any personal reasons. i guess it could double as a means to monitor and improve behavior as well, since there was no appeal when you hit the demerit max.

A demerit is a points based system designed to help instructors in military schools give out fair and unbiased punishment for minor infractions of the rules.

Demerit is the opposite of merit, I guess in the movie, maybe even in the military in general, the word is used as the equivalent of the grade.

A demerit is points off your proficiency score. After so many demerits, you're in deep dodo. So, its best to be on your best behavior if you want to graduate on time.

Well, It is a punitive point against your record. It can be removed with merits and they might reduce on a time frame. Like if you go one month without reprimand ten demerits are errased.
