You should learn to speak Chinese. More people speak chinese than any other lanugage in the world. (like a billion, for real) It would make sense to learn to speak a language that so many people speak. It would mean lot's of opportunity.

Japanese uses two alphabets and some Chinese symbols in its writing. Each alphabet is a sound, thus Japanese is a lot easier to learn. Chinese is all pictorial, and there are tens of thousands of symbols you'll have to know to be fluent in Chinese reading & writing.

But although Chinese is harder to master (it has some difficult-pronouncing sounds), it's like the Latin of East Asian languages. So it has more benefits because then you'll at least be able to assume stuff in other East Asian languages.

So take your pick: something easier to be fluent in or something that will make you smarter about East Asian languages overall.

If you're into asians or their histories, learn to speak chinese because it is the second largest language in the world. As china grows stronger, we see that it might precede English. Of course chinese is as we know the most complicated language. But hard work pays off. Having affluent in chinese means you can now talk to over 1.3billion people. versus 2billion people in japan.
To learn chinese, you'll have to learn the roots, which is called 拼音,(pinyin) 你好(ni hao) hi 再见(zai jian) bye谢谢 (xie xie) thank you

China seems to have more influence and power in the world so go with Chinese...far more people know it in America so in a few decades I think it will be another major language in America.

Why not take a short course on both and see which of the two you enjoy more. It is much easier to stay motivated with something you enjoy, than choosing a language for purely economic reasons.

And maybe you'll end up deciding to learn both.

It all depends on your goals of learning that language. Both are good langauges to learn, and either or will be a benifit to you. If you were to ask me though, I would learn Mandarin Chinese b/c that is what I have learnt (ok, learning!)
