Learning Graphics?

Question

Can someone tell me, what exactly is Open GL and how good is it to learn about Graphics? Is it very useful?

Perhaps I may ask further. How widely used or how popular is OpenGL for graphics? Is it the "in thing" for the learning of graphics? Or do you prefer something else like 3D Studio Max or Gimp?

well...OpenGL is a graphic program...or precisely it is a graphic API which helps in rendering graphics swiftly. For learning graphics, u wont need to learn OpenGL is it just a part which u'll study later. Try buying books on game programming which will help u makin games.

Yea it is damn useful! u wont be able to play games which runs on Open GL on your comp if u dont hav a OpenGL enabled graphic card

i assume you know the fundamentals of imperative programming.

functions, variables, etc.

if not please learn one. a simple one is ruby(Google it and it will be your first step in learning computers. ; ))

open gl is a set of functions and structures(an API) that tells the computer what to draw on the screen. it can also be used to create 3d scenes and such.

the GIMP is a great graphical package for learning 2d graphics. http://www.gimp.org

Depends on your need.

For an introduction to graphic there is very good free program
called GIMP.
