The same as getting a cut, infection if you don't take care of it. Other than that no, I get stuck by them all the time. The slime on their tail will help stop the stinging.

Cuts from a Catfish?
You better believe it.
Catfish are mighty good eating, but catching them can be rather dangerous if you're not careful.
The fins on the dorsal side are very sharp and the fish itself, having no scales, is extremely slippery. So, it's easy to lose a grip on a Catfish you just caught and it can either stick you in the hand or if it falls to the bottom of the boat, stick you in the foot if you step on it.
If that happens, you get the final laugh when you flour those Catfish fillets, fry them up and have them for dinner (along with some Hush Puppies and a homemade Cole Slaw).

Yes, I have had it happen.

It was about six pounds, got off the hook in the boat and flipped against my leg leaving a cut that almost required stitches and hurt like **LL!

It was the barb that got me.

Just make sure you are up to date on your tetanus shot and keep it clean. If you are not current, it might not be a bad idea to visit your family doc and get one. Fish carry loads of germs. Its better to protect yourself.

Not unless it was in polluted water.
The fish itself is harmless, the water may not be :-)
